Don't expect any winsome classical cleverness here, however. St John covers everything from jazz to chamber styles, baroque to the French "chanson populere" of the '30s with ease, the focus on the songs and her own frail, bird-like twitter.

Sophisticated, charming, whimsy free and marred only by the odd plodding grade four arpeggio, it's a beguiling album of musical vignettes from a strange and secret universe. CJ
